What are living relationships and material relationships? Why have they been given to us?
1. Two Types of Human Relationships
While living in this world, we maintain some form of connection with everything around us. These connections can be broadly classified into two categories:
- Living Relationships
These are relationships with living beings—that is, the bonds we share with other living entities like ourselves. For example:
- Mother, father, wife, husband, children
- Friends, relatives, teachers, neighbors
- Household pets
- Birds and animals
- Material Relationships
These are relationships with non-living things and possessions. For example:
- House, land, money
- Vehicles, business/profession
- Property, savings
Both types of relationships help us navigate and sustain our lives. It is through them that we fulfill our needs.
2. What is "Malam" (Cosmic Impurity)?
In this context, Malam does not refer to physical bodily waste. It refers to the inner impurities residing on the soul, such as:
- Ignorance (the state of not knowing)
- Egoism/Arrogance (the pride of "I")
- Attachment (the possessiveness of "Mine")
- Negative emotions like desire (greed), anger, and jealousy
Only when this Malam dissolves does the soul become pure.
3. Why are Relationships Necessary?
It is only when we live and engage with these worldly relationships that the Malam within us gradually dissolves. Here is how it happens: Through Living Relationships → Our Intellect (Arivu) becomes purified.
When we interact with another person, we learn from them. Witnessing their suffering evokes empathy within us. Love, compassion, and patience begin to grow. In this way, human relationships expand our intellect and understanding.
Through Material Relationships → Our Actions (Seyal) become purified.
When we use money and wealth honestly, share with others, give to charity, and engage in hard work—our actions become clean and noble.
4. The World is a "Functional Medium"
Here is an easy analogy to understand this concept: A student goes to school. The teacher, classmates, textbooks, and pens are all mediums that help him study. Once his education is complete, he moves on to a different place. Those school-time relationships remain there.
Similarly, the relationships and wealth we acquire in this birth are for this lifetime only. In the next birth, a new set of relationships will emerge. This is precisely why we do not remember our past lives—it is an intelligent design of nature.
5. Supreme Intellect and Partial Intellect
The entire universe is governed and driven by two great forces:
| Force | Description |
|---|---|
| Supreme Intellect | The ultimate, all-knowing wisdom (Divine Intelligence) |
| Supreme Action | The ultimate capacity that drives everything |
This Supreme Intellect and Cosmic Action exist in a minute measure within every living being:
- Partial Intellect (Pagudhi Arivu) = The limited understanding and wisdom we possess.
- Partial Action (Pagudhi Seyal) = The limited actions and movements we perform.
If you scoop a bucket of water from a vast river, the water in the bucket is still river water, but in a very small quantity. We are just like that—a tiny drop of the Supreme Intellect.
6. How does Cosmic Impurity dissolve?

7. Where We Must Not Falter
| The Wrong Way | The Right Way |
|---|---|
| Remaining ignorant in relationships | Cultivating love and understanding in relationships |
| Being contradictory or compromised in actions | Remaining honest, clean, and righteous in actions |
| Exploiting relationships solely for selfishness | Engaging in relationships with love and a mindset of giving |
8. Summary & Conclusion
We do not live in this world merely to indulge in pleasures. We are here to cleanse our soul by dissolving the Cosmic Impurity - such as ignorance and ego — that reside within us. The relationships and material possessions provided by this world serve as the essential tools to accomplish that work.
In short — living with positivity and love toward both people and material things is the true path to spiritual evolution.
